Description
The term 'Rhone' usually means the wines made in the Rhone Valley. The region is divided into four wine districts - of which the southern Rhone is by far the most important in terms of quantity. The most prestigious districts are the northern areas, including the appellations of Hermitage and Cote Rotie. The Rhone regularly produces more Appellation Controlee wine than any region other than Bordeaux, of which around 95 is red. Wines from Northern Rhone are made predominantly from Syrah and Viognier. In Southern Rhone, the basic blend comprises of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre for reds and Grenache Blanc, Picpoul, Roussanne and Marsanne for whites.
